Mr. Ryan Rampair, past president of the TTTF (Trinidad & Tobago Taekwondo Federation) and of the highest Dan holder under the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) in this country responsible for the development of ITF development planning in this region was very instrumental in our attendance of this championship.

I am more than happy for the opportunity and courtesies extended by the TTTF (Trinidad & Tobago Federation) to head the team and to participate in this tournament. It was in the view or vision of having a wider pool of participants to improve our national standards of sport participation in this region for higher international standards expectations.

We are very happy to report that this tournament was a success and that the experience gained by all competitors was a valuable one. The president of the Grenada Taekwondo Association, Mr. Fronzie Charles and his executive members assured us great hospitality of our stay in Grenada and included us in training events after competition by Master Webster and Master Guy from the United Kingdom. The people are friendly, the beaches are beautiful and clean, the tournament was incident free and as Taekwondo practitioners we bond in mutual friendship. I assured our Trinidad & Tobago team and a commitment to the Grenada Taekwondo Association that we would return to Grenada for the 2^nd Continental Taekwondo Championships next year 2011

The tournament was an overall success and gratitude and commendations were extended to the TTTA Vice President Kenneth Leu Che Lip whom was the overall adjudicator of the tournament and the president Anthony Ferguson who was unfortunately away on taekwondo business, the corner Judges, Amelia Corbie, Gian Corbie, Andrew Lee, Kathrine Lee-A-Ping, Kevin Lee-A-Ping, Sherland Flores,and Dorian Alexander.

Special thanks and congratulations on the professionalism and efficiency control of all matches and protests to the centre referees who had total control of the 66 matches, especailly to Master Linus Brown , Collin Mofford, and Kevin Lee-A-Ping.

Other participating taekwondo schools included Tobago Taekwondo School headed by John Soverall, Olympic Sport and Martial Arts headed by Linus Brown (OSMA) and Sankar Taekwondo School headed by Cheryl Sankar. The tournament was held for competitors ranging from ages five and above and at white belt to senior black belts.

The Trinidad and Tobago Taekwon-Do Federation sent an eight man team to Venezuela on April 24th-25th 2010, to compete in the 4th General Choi Cup ITF International Taekwon-Do Tournament.  The team consisted of three black-belt seniors and five junior coloured belts. Black belts, Russell Dhill, Franklyn Eugene, & Bradly Rampersad.

Junior team, Sanjaya Seunarine, Jaikishan Ram, Rakish Bissoon , Rajesh Bissoon and Imran Khan being most senior of the Junior team. The team management ensured that the players were ready for competition in terms of accommodation, translation, nutrition, transportation and mental preparedness, Mr. Pail Waithe, President, Mr. Ryan Walker, and Ms. Francisca Smith and Franklyn Eugene.

Despite number anomalies due to poor organization by host country Venezuela on the two day of competition our black-belts were unable to medal up against Argentina and Venezuela but performed admirably despite the conditions. After this experience with the senior division of sparring and patterns competition, a concerted effort was placed in ensuring that the junior team was mentally prepared for host country Venezuela and Argentina for the duration of competition.

This proved to be very fruitful as the junior team brought home Three (3) gold medals, Two (2) silver and one (1) bronze, and in patters competition they achieved One (1) silver and Two (2) gold medals for patterns. It must also be mentioned that both patterns gold medalists were colored belts and they defeated red and black belts of Venezuela and Argentina to win their divisions.

Report on Tobago Junior Taekwondo Tournament

On Saturday 24th April, Euge Taekwondo Academy (ETA) Founded by Master Frank Eugene, took part in the first Tobago Junior Taekwondo Tournament which was held at Signal Hill Comprehensive Secondary School. Roger Lezama lead the team into competition on that day as Master Eugene, at the time and day was engaged in competition in Venezuela.

Other participating Taekwondo schools included Tobago Taekwondo School headed by Mr. John Soverall, Olympic Sport and Martial Arts headed by Ms. Linus Brown (OSMA) and Sankar Taekwondo School headed by Ms. Cheryl Sankar. The tournament was held for competitors ranging from ages 5-13.  Seven participants from the ETA took part in this event and the following results were attained:

Special notice is to be made for Ozaze Lewis who though losing his fight 4-5 gave a spirited and energetic performance demonstrating great strategic capacity throughout his 2 rounds. Timothy Nakhid and Joshua Joseph also demonstrated high skill in their respective fights with Timothy defeating an opponent of greater height and weight.

On November 7th 2009, the 1st Taekwondo Alliance of Trinidad & Tobago Taekwondo Championships hosted their first Poomsae & Sparring championships commenced at the Eastern Regional sporting complex in the town of Tacarigua in our beautiful twin island state of Trinidad & Tobago.

The Taekwondo Alliance comprised of three prominent local masters in Taekwondo and has been contributors to the development and propagation of the Korean Olympic sport of Taekwondo in Trinidad and Tobago for over 15years – Master Franklyn Eugene-Euge Taekwondo Academy (ETA), Master Linus Brown – Olympic Style Martial Arts (OSMA) and master Sherland Flores- Flores Taekwondo (FTKD). These were three of the five Taekwondo clubs entered in this event. Master Sheryl- Ann Sankar and Master Ryan Rampair of ITF Taekwondo of Chaguanas were very supportive and played an integral role in participation.

This event was sanctioned by the Trinidad and Tobago Taekwondo Association where the president, Mr. Anthony Ferguson and vice president Mr. Kenneth Lue Che Lip were present to observe, assist and ensure that the Taekwondo competition is conducted according to the World Taekwondo Federation rules where there were no matters of protest raised for resolve.

The purpose of this Championship is to allow all competitors an opportunity to not only display their talents but to test their skills under a competitive environment and for many the first time competing against unfamiliar opponents.

This Taekwondo Championships has deemed successful and would be an annual event. Thanks to all the participants, Taekwondo clubs, instructors, coaches, sponsors, event coordinators of the trophies and competitors inspection. A special thanks to Mr. Leu Che Lip recorder of the electron scoring system, the president of the Trinidad & Tobago.

Mr. Roger Lezama emerged as the Grand Champion of the   Trinidad and Tobago National Taekwondo Championships held at the Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive School Hall on Saturday, November 29th, 2008. Lezama captured gold in the Men’s Senior Welter Weight Division emerging as the Best Male Fighter (Senior) and Best Fighter overall.

Male and Female, juniors and seniors fought in three age categories (11-14; 14-17 and Over 17). They were in competition for the various medals and trophies that were on offer. Several of  the Taekwondo Schools that dot our twin island State entered  with Point Fortin and Tobago participating for the first time.

Marissa Lee of Point Fortin was adjudged the Best Senior Fighter (Female). Miss Joythi Persad was adjudged the Best Junior Fighter (Female) and Tobago’s own Shervon Waldron the Best Junior Fighter (Male). Mr. Chad Lee was awarded the Trophy for Most Improved Fighter and Jadial Harewood, after overcoming tremendous odds, was awarded the Trophy for the Best Spirit.

At the end of the Championships, Mr. John Soverall, Head of the  Tobago Taekwondo and Point Fortin Taekwondo Schools was designated the “Best Coach” for the Tournament.

Mr. Kenneth  Lue Chee Lip, Vice President and Chairman of the Championships, expressed his delight at the proceedings and at the quality of the Fights. He suggested that it augurs well for the rich traditions that Taekwondo continues to build in Trinidad and Tobago.

His two children, Kevin age 13 and Kathrine age 11, competed in the 2006 Chicago Open International Taekwondo Championships last August and brought back for Trinidad and Tobago four medals (three gold medals and one bronze). Kevin and Kathrine were part of a small contingent of four junior athletes who proudly represented their country at these championships.

Kathrine competed in the Girls 11 to 12 age group in two events, namely Poomsae (Forms) and Gyoroogi (Sparring) and won both her events. Gyroogi is a full contact sport. Kevin entered for the same two events in the Boys 13 to 14 age group and won Gold in Gyoroogi and Bronze in Poomsae. It was their first International Competition at which 18 countries participated. It was also the first time, ever, that Trinidad & Tobago participated in a Poomsae competition at an international level.

Kevin and Kathrine started Taekwondo three years ago at Euge Taekwondo Academy under the watchful eyes of instructor Franklyn Eugene. They have made steady progress to their current rank of Red Belt and are working towards achieving Black Belt status.

“Our desire is to represent our country at senior level in a few years time”, says Kevin and Kathrine, “with the ultimate objective of bringing home Olympic Medals”. We are looking towards London 2012 and beyond. Daddy David is very supportive and says that the Chicago trip was the start of those preparations. He hopes to be able to afford at least one international competition a year.

“Preparing future elite athletes in any sport is an expensive business and the support infrastructure needs to be improved”, says David. He continues, “to get to those levels athletes must compete at international level on a regular basis. In addition, all the other professional support services must be available, for example coaching, nutrition/health, sport injury/medicine, physiotherapy, sport psychology, and the like”. “Proper training facilities are also essential”.
